North / South, traditional / contemporary, warm / cool - pairs of opposites? Not when it comes to the design concept behind Cobre. Hosed in a heritage building, the challenge of translating Cobre's nuevo Latino concept into a physical space was awarded to David Christopher and his team at West Vancouver's FX40 Buidling Design Coroporation. Their design captures the passion of Latino cuisine and culture while updating it to the 21st century. The blend is immediately apparent in the restaurnts foyer - cool slate floors balance warm ochre and heritage exposed brick walls which are juxtaposed by an old Latino armoire.

The Wine Vault Lounge envelopes you in warmth. Two walls are dressed with special copper mica wallpaper that reinforces Cobre's copper theme. The ceiling features backlit walnut panels that add to the feeling of a codial room. At the back sits the Wine Vault with its original exposed travertine floors and softly lit collection.

In the Main Bar Dining area sits Sexy Cube - a server station enclosed in a glowing cube of frosted, opaque glass. Its sleek modernity balances the heritage brick walls, exposed wooden ceilings and floors while playfully suggesting the 'iced' pleasures of the bar. Radiating from the open kitchen, copper ceiling scoops lend another contemporary element.

At the end of the Mezzanine Dining Area, light streams in through the large heritage windows. Along the exposed brick wall, comfy banquets invite you to linger. As in the Bar/Dining Area, upholstery elements balance modern with traditional. Adding a touch of Latino romance is an antique Spanish wrought iron balcony railing.
